It was on this date that our UK Government,, those right wing socialists. decided that they would play at being Nanny and protect us from ourselves by banning smoking.
I had smoked cigarettes, rolling my own, since around 13 years old and I am now almost 70!
So, I gave up smoking, for around a week. Then, as I had done so many times in the past, I started smoking small cigars.
You know the type, Cafe Creme and Hamlets etc.
One day, soon after July 1st, I was in Selfridges Department Store, Oxford Street, London and wandered into their walk-in humidor
There were leaflets on the counter, announcing a cigar launch party, in St. James, London.
I applied for a ticket and went along. There were around 200 people in attendance and the cigar in question was a new Cohiba cigar was the new Maduro 5.
From that time on, I was hooked. Since then I have turned to Cuban cigars and won’t smoke anything else.
The biggest barrier, I came up against was price. With the extortionate tobacco tax in the UK, cigars are very, very expensive.
So, I did a Google and came across a great cigar forum that has 3000 members. It was based in Australia and also had an online store connected.
Their cigar stock was tremendous and prices were in US dollars and with the dollar very weak at the time, being around two to the pound, then their prices were very, very cheap working out that their cigars were around a third of UK prices.
